“Speaking to younger students about my experiences and encouraging them to set higher goals for themselves gave me a feeling of accomplishment – I did for them what others did for me in the past.”
Annia Bossé, Office of Regulatory Initiatives, State Street
MIE’s AP STEM Ambassador program is helping close the inspiration gap in Massachusetts by cultivating student interest in pursuing college majors and careers in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields.
STEM professionals – either individually or through their employer – “adopt” Pre-AP and AP classrooms in middle and high schools, and provide students with valuable insights into their own education and career path to inspire, engage and advise the STEM leaders of tomorrow. By sharing their own real-world experiences, AP STEM Ambassadors bring the following subjects alive:
- Computer Science
- English Language
- English Literature
- Environmental Science
The program’s success is tied to a shared commitment between the AP STEM Ambassador and students. This is accomplished through a series of interactions throughout the school year (September to June), which can include:
- Informal encouragement and mentoring
- In-class lectures and workshops
- Presentations at Saturday Study Sessions
- Test-taking support
- Job shadowing
